Book 1: Water
Chapter 4: Return of The Avatar
~Kyla's POV~
Somewhere in the back of my head is that little voice of reason, that says I can't stop a whole town from burning. They haven't had water in a long time, so I can't really bend much. I haven't learned the other elements yet. Well.. maybe I could try the Avatar state?
I dismiss that idea. I don't know how to get there on purpose, how to use it, or anything. What if I hurt one of the very people I was trying to protect? I couldn't risk that. I groan and run off again just as Chris appears down around a corner behind me. I ditch him and make my way to the edge of the fire. The flames are like a wall. The firebenders of the fire navy pushing them forward with the same cold expression that they had worn earlier.
Chris appears next to me on my right and I jump. Emma appears on my right.
"Come on you guys, I can't tell you what is going on and I can't risk you guys getting hurt." I say, my voice more forceful that they had ever heard it for sure.
"We're going to help you Kyla." Chris says stubbornly.
"Ugh." I groan, knowing I can't stop them anyway.
Chris leaps forward into the flames, parting them as he goes. I jump through the small window of flames and kick a solider in the head. His helmet comes off and he grunts as he falls to the ground. The lack of water around here makes me feel disconnected and useless, and that really isn't a good feeling. Chris and Emma take off in either direction, useing their elements to knock some firebender heads.
Suddenly the firebender behind me turns his flames towards me. I barely have time to turn around before I'm falling backwards onto the ground. Then, all I see is fire.
It seems like forever, and even though it only was a few seconds, a blue glow hums to life within me. My eyes shine bluer than before in the Avatar State glow. I feel the power swell. It is almost as if time had stopped for me to do this, because the wall of far is still moving towards me. I hold my hands up and, with a massive blast of air, I put out the fire and knock the firebender off his feet. He knocks over the next closest firebender behind him.
I stand up and take my bending stance, eyes flashing.
"It's the Avatar! Get her!" I hear a man's voice yell.
I turn around to see a young man, not quite middle aged but not really young either, yelling with a red face. That must be the officer that commands the Fire Navy. All the firebenders stop. The wall of fire goes down and the town continues to burn on its own. Nobody from town seems to notice me, they are busy finding family and trying to put the fires out.
I redirect any and all fire that comes my way, using mostly firebending to block the blows, until then I knock all the firebenders down with their own fire. I closed my eyes, and the next thing I know I'm being carried. There is heat all around me, and there is a mist in the air that only a waterbender can sense. It is going to rain. Soon. I can't make myself pull my eyes open, and then the heat is gone.
I feel a drop of water on my lip and I force my eyes open. Harry is looking ahead, not at me, while he carries me. Dread fills me, and I don't know why. Chris always carries me when I needed help.. not Harry. Where was Chris. It's raining now, and Harry has stoped running. He notices that my eyes are open and sets me down. I take a couple steps back, looking out beyond the trees from where we came. I can't even see the town, all I see was black smoke. It was raining, but the rain wasn't doing anything. I take off before Harry can stop me, leaping over the cracks that appear in the ground from Harry. I finally dart out of the trees and slide to a stop.
I automaticly slip into my bending stands and pull all the rain around the town and surrounding area, and make it one big wave that puts out all the fires. I keep a hold on the water after it does its job, and send it on its way so the town doesn't flood. There are puddles everywhere because the ground is so dry, it doesn't know what to do with the water.
Standing there in the rain, I see the ruins of a sweet little down. I see the remains of homes, the mark of the Fire Nation's wrath returned to harm this world. Each building has at least one black scar on it. There are a few around the edges that are burnt to the ground that I couldn't save. I feel a hand on my shoulder, and turn reflexivly to throw the hand off.
"Let's go Kyla, we need shelter and those houses are not going to do us any good right now." Emma says gently.
"No, I need my clothes." I say desperately.
"Well, let's go quick." She says, running towards where she hid the clothes underground in a box. She gets them for me and then we run off towards the rest of the town.
"There you are Kyla. Please don't run off like that" Harry says, putting on his kind face when I see him again.
"I needed to get my clothes. They're all I have left of my culture." I say firmly.
"Okay." Harry shrugs and then walks towards the rest of the town, some are earthbenders like Harry and Emma so they are making earth tents for shelter under the trees.
"Um Kyla, I need to tell you something before we go settle in for the night." Emma says quietly behind me.
"Yeah?" I ask, looking at her quickly.
"Well, the Fire Navy took someone." She says in that same quiet voice.
"Who?" There is a pit in my stomach before I even get the answer.
"They took Chris."
~Chris's POV~
The chains bite on my wrists and ankles. The cell they are keeping me in is small and damp. It smell of mold and bacteria. I've only been here a few hours and the rusty chains have made my wrists bleed. I'm starting to get hungry, and I know they'll feed me but I don't know when. I heard one of the guards talking to the head officer who took me, they're going to use me to get to Kyla. Another part of the conversation I thought was interesting wasn't the part about her being a waterbender, I knew that. It was the part where they said she was the Avatar.
I wonder if that is what she was hiding, and then I brush it off. I don't have to wonder, I know. The blue glow that we had been so scared of must have been the Avatar state. I have heard of it before, although I've never seen it. Then my stomach sinks, she is the last waterbender, and the Avatar, and the Fire Nation is trying to capture her with me as bait. Even kill her. If only I could get out on my own.. or somehow warn her not to come get me so she would be safe. I know she wouldn't listen anyway. I've only know her for about a week, but I feel like I've know her forever.
